The Beara G.A.A.
Welcome to The Beara G.A.A. website.
Without doubt our biggest achievement during the past year was capturing the Premier Minor 2 Football Championship. When Beara won the Premier Minor Football Championship six years ago no-one could have predicted that we would be in the doldrums at this grade in the intervening period. Lots of reasons can be put forward for our demise.
One of the chief reasons being the lack of numbers coming through, a phenomenon all too common to rural clubs in recent years. This is an area in which the GAA should give close consideration and put structures in place to assist clubs which find themselves in such a situation. During the Celtic Tiger era when the construction industry was in full flight small satellite towns and villages around Cork City became engulfed in housing estates to the extent that they became part of the city itself.
With a lack of employment in rural areas more and more people drifted towards the city which created its own social imbalance. The fact that there were no extra no clubs coming into existence meant that clubs in the urban setting couldn't accommodate the large volume of potential players at their disposal while rural clubs were coming under increasing pressure with decreasing numbers to stay in existence. While many will look on the current recession as a curse, maybe it will have a blessing in disguise as it may help to stem the flow from rural Ireland and ensure the survival of rural clubs.
